September 24 - Ligonier Highland Games - Scottish Dog Breed Exhibit

On Saturday, September 24, Maida and I participated in the Scottish Breeds Dog Exhibit at the 58th Annual Ligionier Highland Games. We always enjoy participating in Meet the Breeds events. They are a great experience for the Skyes and we enjoy seeing the pure joy on the faces of our Skye visitors. Our participants were 9.5-year old GCHB. Gleanntan Gaelforce - “Cooper”, 5-year old GCHB. Gleanntan First Lady of the Skyes - “Amelia”, 2-year old Gleanntan Ocean of Light - “Sunny”, 11-month old Finnsky Wildrose - “Rose”, 7-month old Gleanntan Wrong Way Corrigan - “Corey” and 7-month old Gleanntan Belcourt’s Belle of the Ball - “Sophie”.

Joining us at the Skye booth were friends, Frank Basta and Holly Jershin Basta and their wonderful dogs, Shuffles (litter sister to Cooper) and Higgins. Also joining us for much of the afternoon were friends Kate Kozeliski and Kevin Jarzomski. Kate and Kevin spent quite a bit of time standing behind the Skyes, skillfully and patiently answering the range of Skye “frequently asked questions”.

There was a non-stop stream of visitors to our booth from the time of opening at 9 a.m. to closing at 4 p.m. - no time for lunch! A highlight of the day came just before closing when we were visited by a young girl who was deaf. Using sign language through her father, we explained that she was welcome to visit with Cooper. After giving Cooper a hug, the joy on her face was priceless!

July 6 - DEXTER - BEST IN SHOW - Bushy Run Kennel Club

We had two Skyes entered in the Bushy Run KC shows on July 2-3. Our entry consisted of GCHB. Dexter Jetser Bohemia Skywalker - “Dexter” and 9-month old Finnsky Wildrose - “Rose”. We entered these shows mainly to meet up with Roxan Rohrich and to give her a chance to see the 5-month old pups, Corey and Sophie.

On Saturday, July 2, under judge Judith White, Dexter earned BOB and Rose was WB & BOS. Later in the day, Dexter went on to win the terrier group under judge Marjorie Underwood. Then, Dexter returned to the Best in Show ring under judge Betsy Yates. In a beautiful final lineup of dogs, Dexter earned BEST IN SHOW. First Mrs. Yates selected the Ibizan Hound as RBIS. As she announced the Best in Show dog as “The Skye Terrier”, it was surreal. I couldn’t help but reflect back to October 1, 2005 when I handled “Michael” - Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers to Best in Show at the Old Dominion KC show under judge Lawrence “Skip” Stanbridge. At that time, Michael’s BIS was the first owner/handled Best in Show in over a decade. Now, 11 years later, Dexter, another owner/handled Skye earned BIS.

The following day, Sunday, July 3, under judge/Cairn Terrier breeder, Kenneth Kauffman, Dexter earned BOB and Rose was WB & BOS. Dexter then went on to a Group 2 (see photo below).
