Gleanntan Kennels - 2005:
The Year in Review
|

Looking
back on 2005, this was a year marked by a “passing
of the baton” from one generation of Gleanntan Skyes to
another. While our veterans were making us proud in the
twilight of their show careers, a promising new generation
of Gleanntan youngsters made successful forays into the show
ring.
Gleanntan Skyes were entered in a number of shows with
national-level competition, including the Potomac Skye
Terrier Club Specialty in April; the four-day Skye Terrier
Club of America Supported Entry shows in Ohio in August; and
the four days of the Skye Terrier Club of America National
Specialty – Montgomery Weekend in October.
We are
particularly pleased with how our youngsters fared in
competition. In each of the three Specialty and Supported
Entry show weekends described above, our youngsters earned
major points for a total of 5 majors (four 5-point majors
and one 4-point major).
On
October 1, our veteran, Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers –
“Michael” established a new all-time Best in Show record
for a male Skye Terrier, eclipsing a record that had been in
place since 1969. Michael completed the year as the #1
Skye – Group Points – the 3rd year in the past 7 that he has finished #1
in either breed or group points or both (1999, 2000, 2005). At the end of the year, Michael was retired
from competition.
Our
veteran bitch, Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose – “Emily” was
shown on a very limited basis in 2005, largely to provide
opportunities for her to be seen with her offspring. In just
13 shows, Emily earned 3 group placements, including a Group
4 at the Mahoning-Shenango KC – STCA Supported Entry show
with an entry of 328 terriers. Emily capped off her year by
taking Best of Opposite Sex at the Skye Terrier Club of
America National specialty in October. Emily completed
the year as the #1 Skye Terrier bitch - Group Points.
We also
added a new youngster to our program Finnsky Gladiator -
"Tony" (Int. Ch. Finnsky Alan x FIN Ch. Finnsky
Claudia). Tony came to us in October from Thea and Rolf
Dahlbom - Kennel Finnsky. He will be making
his ring debut in 2006.
Looking
ahead to 2006, we will be active with our youngsters
including, Gleanntan Goodnessxposed – "Emma" and
Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch – "Glinda" as well as our
import puppy, Finnsky Gladiator – "Tony". Also to be
actively shown will be Gleanntan Goodietwoshoes -
"Gladys" who will be shown by her owner Anne O’Reilly
and Gleanntan Grammy Girl - "Donna" who will be in
the ring in Denmark. We will also look at a few selected
shows for our veteran bitch, Emily.
It is
hard to imagine that March 10, 2006 will mark the 5th
anniversary of the passing of Donna Dale. Donna is missed
every day here, but her spirit shines brightly in our lives
and in the Gleanntan Skyes that she so dearly loved. |

the final show of the year in Cleveland, Ohio.
November 21
For the better part of 2005, we have
been focusing on the girls from Reggie x Emily's August, 2004
litter. There is one boy from the
litter who is coming along, and he will be making his way into
the show ring in 2006. This evening, after bathing him, I
thought you might like to see a photo of Gleanntan
Gottalookatme - "Boz" who we co-own with Travis Wright. When
I look at Boz's strong, powerful headpiece, his very moderate
size and pleasing proportions, I can't help but think back to
his grandfather, Ch. Gleanntan
Gotheriteonebaby - "Ray".

We are thoroughly
enjoying training, socializing and sharing lighter moments with
our import puppy, Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony".
This weekend we were not at shows so we had an opportunity to
take a few new photos of Tony.

November 14 -
Greensboro, North Carolina
Maida and I were
at two shows this past weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The shows were the Furniture City Kennel Club shows, held at the
Greensboro Coliseum.
Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael"
showed nicely both days and he earned a Group 2 on Saturday under judge
James White and a Group 3 on Sunday under judge Linda More. We
also had our 15-month old youngster, Gleanntan Goodnessxposed
- "Emma" entered and I was pleased with
her performance.
November 7
We were at two shows
in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania with Michael and Emma. Also, Anne
O'Reilly had Emma's littermate Gleanntan Goodietwoshoes -
"Gladys" entered. Michael made the cut both days. Emma took
WB/BOS the first day (see photo below) and Gladys took WB/BOS the second day. It
was an enjoyable Fall weekend with the foliage at or slightly
beyond peak colors.

November 7 - News
from Denmark
Our friend
Tina Toft Andersen, Kennel Skyewalker sent this wonderful news
from Denmark today: "This weekend we participated on the last
two shows in Denmark and I'm proud to tell you that DJ (Gleanntan
Grand Musicmaker) went Skye Terrier Of The Year 2005 and
Donna (Gleanntan Grammy Girl) went Best Opposite of The
Year 2005. In addition to that, Donna gained her number 4th CAC
and DJ wrote Danish Terrier Club history by winning Best of
Breed at all of the 14 shows he participated in this year. And
above all, for the first time ever a Skye was placed in Top
Terrier 4 - DJ went Terrier of The Year # 4.

National Specialty
Montgomery County Kennel Club - October 9, 2005
Judge: Marieann Gladstone
We have just returned from 4 days of
shows that included the Skye Terrier Club of America's National
Specialty show at Montgomery County Kennel Club. This year's
shows featured just about everything - excellent competition,
fun times with our Skye friends, torrential tropical storm rains, the Devon show being cancelled
completely and lots of mud. For us it was a weekend to showcase
our Skyes and to welcome a new youngster into our hearts.
Gleanntan's lineup this year
included our veteran special, Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose -
"Emily" and 3 of her daughters, Gleanntan Givemebusybee!,
Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch, and Gleanntan Goodnessxposed. In
addition, our friend Anne O'Reilly had a fourth Emily daughter
entered, Gleanntan Goodietwoshoes and Roxan had Emily's
brother entered, Ch. Gleanntan Gotitxactlyrite - "Arnie".
Attending a national specialty always provides opportunities to
spotlight your breeding program and also to benchmark your work
against that of your peers. Although we knew it would be quite a
bit of work (!), we decided to enter Emily and her girls to
highlight what we value in our program - consistency of type in
one litter; balance; strength of bone while at the same time
maintaining the lowness, moderate size, and the lack of exaggeration
that is occasionally seen in the Skye ring today.
We were honored to have the judges
reward our girls as follows:
October 6 - Morris & Essex Kennel
Club - judge: Kenneth McDermott
Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch - 1st in the Bred by Exhibitor
bitch class which featured some very nice exhibits from across
the U.S.
October 7 - Hatboro Dog Club -
judge: Lee Herr
Winners Bitch (5 point major) to complete her championship -
Gleanntan Givemebusybee! (from the BBE class)
Award of Merit - Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose
October 9 - Skye Terrier Club of
America National Specialty
Montgomery County
Kennel Club - judge: Elaine Young
Best of Opposite Sex (in a field of 5 quality bitch specials)
- Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose
Best Junior in Sweepstakes - Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch
We also welcomed a
new male Skye puppy into our hearts. Our friend, Meri Aalto,
attended the Specialty weekend and brought our newest addition Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony"
(INT, FIN, S, N CH Finnsky Alan x FIN CH Finnsky Claudia) from
Finnsky
Kennels, Thea and Rolf Dahlbom, Finland. You can read more about
Tony on his page.

October 1- A History-Making Best in
Show
Maida and I were at the Warrenton
Kennel Club show on Saturday, October 1 and the Old Dominion
Kennel Club show on Sunday, October 2. On Saturday, our 8-year old
veteran dog, Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael"
earned Best in Show under judge Lawrence E. Stanbridge. Earlier
in the day, he was awarded a Group 1 under judge Glenda Dawkins,
thereby giving him the opportunity to advance to the BIS ring.
This was the first
owner/handled/non-professionally handled Skye Terrier Best in
Show win in over a decade. It was also Michael's 9th Best in
Show win, which eclipsed the 35-year record of BIS wins for a male Skye
Terrier. The record had been held by Walter F. Goodman's
legendary Ch. Glamoor Go Go Go - "Junior" who set the record in
1969 (source: Terrier Type Magazine - Volume 38, Number 1,
January, 1999).
On Sunday, Michael earned a Group 3 under judge Kenneth McDermott.
Below are a few photos that Maida
captured from
Saturday's group and BIS competition:

September 19
We had two of our Skyes entered in
the Lehigh Valley KC and Berks County KC shows this past
weekend. These two shows are held at very exhibitor-friendly
sites and are favorites in this area. The competition at the
terrier group level is always intense as handlers and owners
prepare for the big Montgomery Weekend. The Skye entry was our
two only - veteran, Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael"
and Gleanntan Goodnessxposed - "Emma" in her first shows.
We are very fond of Emma's conformation and temperament and I
have been looking forward to starting her on her show career.
So, we went to the shows to give Emma the experience. Michael
took BOB both days and made the cut in the group on Saturday.
The weather was a bit warm but quite nice. All in all, a most
enjoyable weekend at the shows. Below is a photo of Emma taken
yesterday:

Maida, Roxan, Ben, Anne O'Reilly and
I were at the Sugarbursh KC and Western Reserve KC shows at the
Cleveland Metroparks Polo Field in Chagrin Falls, Ohio this past
weekend. The entry at both shows consisted of 3 class bitches, 1
male special and 1 bitch special. We had our veteran bitch,
Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose - "Emily" entered in BOB
competition and Anne had her one-year old Emily daughter
Gleanntan Goodietwoshoes - "Gladys" entered in the 12-18
month bitch class.
We are pleased to report that Emily took Best of Breed both days
- at the Sugarbush KC under judge Dr. Gerald Mager and at the
Western Reserve KC under breeder/judge Sandra Goose Allen. Emily
also earned a Group 2 at the Western Reserve show. Gladys took
Winners Bitch both days proudly handled by her owner, Anne
O'Reilly (Anne also earned a 3 point major on her Basset Hound
at Western Reserve!).
As I have written previously, we
decided to return Emily to the ring in late July for a limited
show schedule because her weight, body, muscle and coat
condition has never been better. We also wanted her to be seen
by selected judges and the fancy with one or more of her
offspring puppy bitches. We feel that Emily has put her stamp on
her get and have enjoyed watching her kids develop (and meet
with some success of their own in the ring.)
August 18
With a very heavy heart, we sent our
beloved "Fiona" (Ch. Gleanntan Sonsie Solway Maid)
to heaven on Tuesday, August 15. I feel sure that she ran into
the arms of her breeder, Donna Dale.

and her two puppy bitches at the Skye Terrier Club of America
Supported Entry shows

at the Mahoning-shenango KC show - August 7, 2005
Maida, Roxana and I were at four
shows from Thursday, August 4 through Sunday, August 7 in
Canfield, Ohio. The four shows were supported entry shows for
the Skye Terrier Club of America. These shows typically attract
majors in both dogs and bitches most or all of the four days and
that was true for this year's shows. The entry each day was 5
class dogs; 7 class bitches; 1 male special and 1 bitch special.
We entered our 7.5 year old
veteran bitch, Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose - "Emily" and two
of her 11 month old puppy bitches, Gleanntan
Glindathegoodwitch - "Glinda" and Gleanntan Givemebusybee!
- "Bea".
We are very pleased to report that
Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch earned Winners Bitch for a 5
point major from the 9 to 12 month puppy class on Thursday under
judge Desmond J. Murphy. She also went on to Best of Opposite
Sex over her dam. On Saturday, Gleanntan Givemebusybee!
took Winners Bitch under judge Walter F.
Goodman and then went Best of Opposite Sex over her dam for a 5
point major.
The exclamation point of our weekend
came yesterday - the final day of the Canfield circuit. Ch.
Gleanntan Grandxpose - "Emily" took Best of Breed under
judge Lydia C. Hutchinson and then went on to a Group 4 in a
strong field of terriers. With specialties and supported entries
in many of the terrier breeds, there were 328 terriers
entered at this show. Much to our surprise and satisfaction, we
looked through the catalog and noted that Emily was the
oldest terrier at this show.

Emily continues to make us very proud for
her accomplishments in the show ring and for what she has
produced in the whelping box.
For the Skyes, the highlight of the
long weekend came each evening when Emily and her 3 puppies (Glinda, Bea
and Emma - who will be making her ring debut later in the year)
got to spend time on the king size bed!!

July 24 - Emily
takes a Group placement in her first show in two years
Just over two years ago, in April,
2003, Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose - "Emily" captured Best of
Breed at the Potomac Skye Terrier Club's Regional Specialty.
This was the capstone of her show career that included multiple group wins and group placements and the ranking of #1
Skye bitch in 2001 and 2002 (#3 Skye overall).
After the Potomac Specialty, Emily retired
from the show ring to try her hand in the whelping box. She had two
litters - one in 2003 and one in 2004. Since her August, 2004
litter, we
have been patiently conditioning Emily and yesterday marked her return to
the show ring. We had Emily and her 11-month old puppy bitch, Glinda - Gleanntan
Glindathegoodwitch (x Ch. Gleanntan Going For It), entered in
the Putnam Kennel Club show in Stormville, NY.
We are pleased to say that Emily
earned a Group 4 in a decent group of terriers (#1 Mutiple BIS
winning Colored Bull Terrier took G2 and #1 Soft Coated Wheaten
took G3) under judge Dr. Gerald Mager.

We were at two shows this past
weekend in Maryland. The two littermate bitches, Bea (Ch.
Gleanntan Givemebusybee!), owned by Jo Ann Lyons and
Gleanntan, and Gladys (Gleanntan Goodietwoshoes)
owned by Anne O'Reilly, were the Skye entry. At the Upper
Marlboro KC show on Saturday, July 9, Bea took WB/BOB under
judge Mr. Gary Doerge. In the group competition, Bea made the
cut. On Sunday, July 10, Gladys took WB/BOB under judge Ann
Katona for her first point. Gladys also made the cut in the
group. It was very nice to have these youngsters recognized for
consideration in the group.
July 6
Roxan and Ch. Gleanntan
Gotitxactlyrite - "Arnie" went to shows in Mooretown, Ontario,
Canada during the July 4th weekend. Arnie earned a Terrier Group 1 on
Friday; a Group 2 on Saturday; and a Group 2 on Sunday to complete
his Canadian championship. Congratulations to Roxan and Arnie.

June 28
Farewell dearest "Piper" - Gleanntan
Galactica. From your littermate, Fiona.
It is hard to believe that we are at the midway
point of the 2005 show season. Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers -
"Michael" has been at shows with Lisa and Mark Bettis. At
the same time, we have been devoting our energies this year to
training our youngsters from the Reggie x Emily litter (born
8/19/2004). We have been very pleased with the pups in this
litter and it has sharpened our focus on the attributes that we
value in the Gleanntan breeding program including strength of
bone, balance, and confident/loving temperaments.
Due to work schedules, we were unable to travel to Southern
California this June to participate in the Skye Terrier Club of
Southern California Specialty at Great Western. We decided to
enter the small South Hills KC shows in Western Pennsylvania
that same weekend, essentially for practice and to continue to
benchmark the girls. We entered littermates, Bea (Ch.
Gleanntan Givemebusybee!) and Glinda (Gleanntan
Glindathegoodwitch) and our friend Anne O'Reilly had a third
littermate entered, Gladys (Gleanntan Goodietwoshoes). The
total entry also included a Open class bitch and a Specials dog.
We are very pleased with the way all three girls showed. Bea
was Winners Bitch for 2 points each day and Gladys was
Reserve.
June 20
Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael"
was at three shows this past weekend and took Best of Breed all
three days. He also had success in the group ring. On Friday, at
the Conewango Valley KC show, her earned at Group 4 under judge
Mr. Robert Forsyth. At the second Conewango Valley KC show on
Saturday, he earned another Group 4 under judge Mr. James White.
On Sunday, at the Erie Kennel Club in Western Pennsylvania,
"Michael" won the terrier group under judge Mrs. Peggy
Beisel-McIlwaine.

From Tina Toft Andersen in Denmark: "On June 11, we had an
International show with almost 2,800 entries and
Int. Ch. Gleanntan Grand
Musicmaker - "DJ" went Best of Breed.
Gleanntan Grammy Girl - "Donna" went to her first show in
Denmark and went BOS and took her first CAC. She was too young
to become the CACIB (they need to be 15 months before that can
happen) To become a Danish Champion you need three CAC's given
by 3 different judges. Also the dogs must be at least 18 months
before that can happen, but they can win all the CACs that is
possible until they are old enough to get their championship.
The judge was Mrs. Lynette Brown from Australia.
The day after we had our Terrier Club show with 330 entries
and here the judge was Mr. E.W. Darby, Great Britain. Again DJ
went BOB and Donna went BOS with her number 2 CAC! Also DJ went BIS 3 under our Australian judge from the day before, and this
means he is currently number 3 on the Top 10 Terrier list in the
competition Terrier Of The Year in Denmark."
May 31
Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael"
was at four shows in Kalamazoo, Michigan this past weekend. We
are pleased to report that he earned a Group 2 at the Grand
Rapids KC show on Saturday, May 28 under judge Dr. Harry Smith.
On Monday, May 30, at the Battle Creek KC show, he earned a
Group 1 under judge Richard Powell. These shows had entries in
the 1,700 to 2,000 range.
Maida and I spent the Memorial Day
Weekend in Williamsburg, Virginia with our puppy bitch,
Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea". Although Bea was
the only Skye each of the three days, we valued the training and
socialization that came from her time both in the ring and
outside of the ring. We also had a wonderful "guided tour" of
Colonial Williamsburg's Duke of Gloucester Street from our
Scottie friend, Bob Moore.
Bea will now have a few weeks off
while we introduce her littermate
Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch - "Glinda" to the ring.
May 23 - Lucky
Three
Our 9-month old puppy bitch,
Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea" took a Group 3
at the Mattaponi Kennel Club show under Skye breeder/judge
Sandra Goose Allen. With a total terrier entry of 162, there was
depth to the group.
GR1 went to the Green Team's Norwich; GR 2 went to
Joan Scott's Parson Russell; GR 3 to the Skye; and GR 4 to
Damara Bolte's Border. At the Carroll Kennel Club show the
following day, Bea
competed in a Puppy group and earned a Group 3 under judge Ann
Hearn. Of course, it will be hard to top the thrill of earning
the Group 3 in the adult group on Saturday!
At the Genesee County KC show in
Flint, Michigan, Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael"
also earned a Group 3 under judge Norman L. Patton.
May 16
Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael"
earned a Group 2 at the Midland Michigan KC show on Saturday,
May 14 under judge Linda C. More and a Group 3 placement the
following day under judge Charlotte Clem McGowan.

Best of Breed (from the Puppy class)
Bucks County Kennel Club - Erwinna, Pennsylvania
May 7, 2005 - Judge: H. Peter Luyten, Victoria, Australia
The Bucks County Kennel Club show
was held on Saturday, May 7 in Erwinna, Pennsylvania. This
prestigious show is always highly anticipated as it is
considered to be a breeders' showcase. With specialty shows and
supported entries for a number of clubs, Bucks is a favorite
venue for introducing promising youngsters
to the fancy. The group competition at the end
of the day is always keenly competitive with an enthusiastic
audience at ringside.
This year, we returned to the Bucks County KC show
and we had reason to celebrate. Our promising
8-month old puppy bitch
Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea", co-owned with Jo
Ann Lyons, went all the way to BEST OF BREED from the Puppy bitch class under judge H. Peter Luyten,
a terrier breeder judge from Victoria, Australia. The entry was
9 Skyes (3-4-1-1 with two class dogs absent and one of the
specials absent). Later in the day we returned for the terrier
group which included a number of the nation's top terriers. The
icing on the cake was that Bea was also one of about 8 terriers
pulled for final consideration in the terrier group (see photo
below).
For more information on Bea as well

We are also happy to report that
Bea's littermate, Gleanntan Goodietwoshoes - "Gladys" took
Reserve Winners Bitch from the Puppy class. Gladys is owned and
proudly shown by
our friend, Anne D. O'Reilly. For more information on Gladys as well

Potomac Skye Terrier Club Specialty show and weekend
Two Gleanntan Skyes were entered in
the 32nd Potomac Skye Terrier Club Specialty show on Friday,
April 22, 2005 and the Old Dominion KC show on Saturday.
Twenty-month old Gleanntan Pot Of Gold - "Midas", owned
by Joe and Ginger Lindsey, was entered in the Bred by Exhibitor
dog class both days. This year featured strong competition in
dogs (males) with one puppy; four fully-coated, well
conditioned, Bred by Exhibitor dogs, and two mature Open class
dogs. It is rare to get this depth of competition at anything
but a specialty show and you generally find such
competition only a few times a year.
We are pleased to report that Midas
took Winners Dog/Best of Winners for a 5-point major at the PSTC
Specialty on Friday and Winners Dog/Best of Winners/Best of
Breed on Saturday for a 4-point major to complete his AKC
championship (pending AKC confirmation). Midas now has
his own page on our site.
Our 8-month old puppy bitch Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea"
showed nicely in the Sweepstakes competition and took Best in
Sweepstakes. The following day, at the Old Dominion KC show, Bea
took Reserve Winners bitch (Winners was a major) from the Puppy
class going up over an Open bitch. On Sunday, at the Baltimore
County KC show, Bea again took Reserve Winners Bitch from the
Puppy class (Winners was a major) over an Open bitch. We were
pleased with the comments that we received on our puppy and with
how she fared in a field of nice Skye bitches.
And, we have a new photo of Bea's
littermate, Gleanntan Grammy Girl - "Donna" from her
proud new owner Tina Toft Andersen, Denmark. "Donna" will be
making her ring debut very soon!

Also, Lisa Bettis had Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael"
entered in the Terre Haute KC shows and he earned a Group 3 on
Thursday under judge Lanny Hirstein; a Group 3 on Friday under
judge Denny Mounce; and a Group 3 on Sunday under judge Maxine
Beam.
April 17 - Bea
earns her first points
Eight month old littermates Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea"
and Gleanntan Goodietwoshoes - "Gladys" were entered in
two of the Blue and Gray Cluster shows this weekend in
Harrisburg, PA. There were four class bitches entered for the
two days with one Open bitch being absent - thus leaving one in
Puppy class, one in BBE class and one in Open class. At the
Harrisburg KC show on Saturday, April 16, Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea"
took Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex for her first point
under judge Lee Herr. Today at the Lebanon County KC show, Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea"
again took Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex for a second
point under judge Richard Bauer. Gleanntan Goodietwoshoes -
"Gladys" went Reserve Winners Bitch. A third littermate
bitch, Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch, came along for the
socialization and she made a number of laps around the show
building "strutting her stuff" and meeting new people. Bea is
owned by Jo Ann Lyons and Gleanntan Kennels and Gladys is owned
by Anne D. O'Reilly.
April 11
Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea"
continues to enjoy her "on the job training" as she earned a
Terrier Puppy Group 2 under Scottish Terrier breeder/judge,
Alice Watkins at the Chesapeake KC show in Maryland.

Our hearts are heavy followed the
passing of our beloved Am. & Finnish Ch. Skyelight Afrodite -
"Mindy" at age 14. Mindy was a Multiple Group
Placer and a Group Winner as a Veteran and was Top Producing
Skye Terrier (Terrier Type) in 2000. She also taught many of her
housemates the fine art of boomer ball.
In more pleasant news, Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael"
earned a Group 3 today at the Saginaw Valley KC show under judge
James Reynolds.
April 7 -
Catching up on the news from Gleanntan
Last weekend Maida and I had our 7
month old puppy, Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea" entered
in the two Western Pennsylvania Kennel Association shows in
Pittsburgh. These shows were her first two outings in the ring
and, although there were no points available, it was a positive
experience and a nice way to benchmark Bea's training and
socialization. Bea has been very "busy" in her young life as she has
already made a
number of pet therapy visits to the Ronald McDonald House in
Hershey, PA. She has also enjoyed a few handling classes and
many walks in the apple orchard across the street from our home.
In Pittsburgh, Bea showed her usual poise, both in and out of
the ring. She most enjoyed greeting many children who were attending the shows
with their parents.
Our veteran, Ch. Gleanntan Gee
Whillikers - "Michael" was also entered both days and took
Best of Breed on Sunday under judge David Doane.
Also, on Sunday, April 3, Tina Toft
Andersen had Int. Ch. Gleanntan Grand
Musicmaker - "DJ" entered in a national show in Denmark with
1,800 entries. From Tina: "DJ went BOB under the breed
specialist the Swedish Judge but living in Denmark, Mr. Svend
Loevenkjaer. Mr. Loevenkjaer had for some years ago a Skye
himself, a cream-colored male named Fantomen Mik, which was both
Show and Hunting Champion. Today Mr. Loevenkjaer breeds English
Springer Spaniels and Newfoundlanders under the Kennel Name
Spring Creek. In the group DJ went 4 under the Danish judge Mrs.
Hanne Laine. Handler of DJ was Mr. Tonny Bergstroem."
And finally, today - another puppy from our
Reggie x Emily breeding - born in August, 2004 departed the U.S.
on her way to Tina in Denmark. We wish Tina and Tonny much
happiness with their new pup, Gleanntan Grammy Girl -
"Donna".
March 28 - News
from Denmark
From Tina Toft Andersen: "(On
March 26) at
Danish Terrier Club show, Int. Ch. Gleanntan Grand Musicmaker
(Ch. Gleanntan Greatxplorer x Ch. Sonsie Aida) went BOB under
the German Judge Mrs. Frauke Hinch, famous breeder of Norfolk
and Norwich Terriers. At the BIS final he went BIS 3 under the
Hungarian judge Mrs. Zsuanna Petik with the words "world class". On Sunday the 27th we had one more Danish
Terrier Club show where DJ went BOB under judge Mrs. Zsusanna
Petik from Hungary. The same evening I went to The Netherlands
to participate in an International show in the city of
Leeuwarden on Monday the 28th. It's called the Big Easter Show
with 2,100 entries. DJ went BOB again under judge Mrs. Margret
Muller Sieber from Germany. Her written critic of DJ is as
follows: "3 years old impressive male. Excellent head and
expression, shown in super condition. Excellent topline and
tailset, excellent coat texture and moves and shows very well".
And then he went on and was placed as Group 6. In some of the
Dutch International Shows, they sometimes place up to 10 dogs in
the groups."
Congratulations to Tina and DJ!
March 26 - A
Recent Skye Visit to the Ronald McDonald House
Maida and I participate with our Skyes in
the pet therapy program at the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey,
Pennsylvania. Recently, we visited with 7 year old Emily (Ch.
Gleanntan Grandxpose) and her two 7 month old puppies, Bea (Gleanntan
Givemebusybee!) and Gladys (Gleanntan Goodietwoshoes). Gladys is
owned by our friend Anne O'Reilly who also joined us that
evening.
The children staying at the house at first
did not know what to make of the Skyes. But, after being
lavished with Skye kisses from Emily, Bea and Gladys, the
children were soon enchanted by the magic of the Skye Terrier.
For much of the evening the children took turns walking the
Skyes around the first floor of the house, smiling from ear to
ear!

Some of the puppies from our August, 2004
litter of nine are beginning to make their way into the show
ring. This past weekend Gleanntan Goodietwoshoes - "Gladys"
was entered in two matches. On Saturday, at the Mason & Dixon
Kennel Club match, Gladys took Terrier Group 1. On Sunday, at
the well-attended Old Dominion Kennel Club of Northern
Virginia match, Gladys took Best in Match.
Gladys is proudly owned and shown by a
newcomer to Skyes, Anne D. O'Reilly of Hummelstown,
Pennsylvania. However, Anne is not new to the sport of dogs -
she is a long-time breeder/judge of Basset
Hounds so she understands the finer points of presenting long
and low achondroplastic breeds. Congratulations to Anne and Gladys!
